Hi, my name is Irene and I grew up with chickens, goats and a garden. I am told its all my fault that my family ever started with farm animals since I brought home 2 chicks that were hatched in my 1 st grade class. Of course, the next spring, we had to get a few more! At age nine, I was constantly getting sick with strep throat. Even with antibiotics, I would be sick again in a of couple weeks. My Mom was at her wits end until some elderly folks suggested raw goat’s milk. At the time there was no one selling goat’s milk near us so we bought a la mancha doe, Scarlet. And it worked! I did not get strep throat after I started drinking fresh raw milk.
We found a roomy house with 3 acres of pasture. Nothing too big, but plenty of room for a large garden, orchard, and livestock. Over the 11 years we have lived here, we have planted a large orchard, built a raised bed garden, a barn, chicken coop and wood shed. We have had jersey cows, miniature beef cows, ducks, alpacas, turkeys, chickens, and several breeds of goats.
I was raised with conventional farming methods, but 2 years ago started researching more natural methods of gardening and raising livestock. I discovered permaculture and have been applying those principles to the farm. Last year we put in 2 large swales in the front pasture, have incorporatedcompanion planting and living ground covers for the orchard. I also came across a couple blogs about using herbs and essential oils that inspired me to learn more. I am now studying herbalism and aromatherapy to more naturally care for my family’s health.
Last year, I started my own business of herbal skin care products. This has been quite a journey so far, working full time, running a homestead, and trying to get a new business up and running! So welcome to Birch Leaf Farm! I hope you will stick around and find some useful tips for your garden or livestock, herbal recipes, and be inspired to pursue your own dream of a becoming an entrepreneur!
